Raw Homemade Dog Treats

Homemade dog treats don’t have to involve any cooking or baking. There is an increasing trend in feeding dogs a raw diet that consists of uncooked meats and vegetables. One popular version of this diet is known as the bones and raw foods (BARF) diet. This diet places an emphasis on feeding your dog only natural foods that have not been cooked or otherwise processed. You can follow the principles of this diet to provide your dog with homemade dog treats that don’t involve a great deal of work.

The BARF diet includes the use of raw, meaty bones and includes items such as chicken wings, necks and backs. It is important to note that while it is safe to give your dog raw chicken that includes bones, it is not safe to give them chicken that has been cooked that includes the bones. The bones are softened during the cooking process making them brittle and a choking hazard for dogs. However, raw chicken bones are not likely to splinter and create this hazard and are therefore safe to give to dogs.

Purchasing a bag of frozen chicken wings is one way to provide your dog with incredibly simple homemade dog treats. These treats can be as simple as removing a chicken wing or two from your freezer and distributing them to your dog.

1 cup cornmeal

3 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour

1 tablespoon garlic powder

4 tablespoons instant soup stock mix

4 pieces of bacon cooked and chopped into small pieces

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 1/3 cup water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl and then add the bacon, vegetable oil and peanut butter. Next add the water a little bit at a time until you achieve the desired consistency.

Knead the dough by hand and then roll it onto a floured surface until it is 1/4 inch thick. Next, cut the dough using cookie cutters of the desired shape. Bake for approx 35 - 45 minutes, basting lightly bacon drippings periodically throughout the cooking process. After the 45 minutes turn off the oven and leave the homemade dog treats inside for an additional hour. This will help the treats to harden making them effective for helping to clean your dog’s teeth. After removing the treats, allow them to cool adequately before serving them to your dog.

Dog Treat Recipe - Sor-bay at the Moon

Dessert Category

Sor-bay at the Moon

Category: Dessert
Serves: 3 dozen
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 0 minutes

Quick Tips:

Baby food is a great way to give your dog’s nutritional intake a kickstart. It’s typically all natrual, contains lots of vitamins and minerals, is easy to digest, and dogs love it. It is the perfect way to give your dog a treat they like that is also nutritional.

Ingredients:

  • 950 ml (4 cups) yogurt (any flavour)
  • 1 jar baby food, fruit flavour
  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp) honey
  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp) natural peanut butter

Preparation & Cooking:

  • Puree all ingredients in a food processor. Keep it going until it is a smooth mixture. We don’t want any lumps in there.
  • Get your ice cube trays and pour the mixture into them. You will probably need 2 - 3 depending on the size.
  • Now pop them in your freezer so they can at least freeze over night.
  • When serving you can microwave briefly or pop them on the bench so they can thaw slightly before serving. You must be careful though as you don’t want it melting and going all over the place. Best if you put it outside otherwise you will be either mopping the floor or worse yet, getting your carpets steam cleaned.
