Feeding and Keeping You Dog Healthy

If the puppy seems warm or sleepy too much of the time, ask one of your parents to take its temperature. A dog’s temperature normally is between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius. If its temperature rises above 39 degrees, call your veterinarian.

When you buy your puppy, ask what shots it has received and when it got them. If it has not received shots to prevent distemper, infectious hepatitis, leptospirosis, and rabies. take it immediately to a veterinarian to have them. Then get yearly boosters. You should also find out whether your puppy has been wormed. Most puppies have worms at some time.

For the first few days, you should feed your puppy the same diet as the owners did. If you wish to change the diet, do so gradually. Each day, feed a little of the new food mixed with the old.

Puppies 6 to 10 weeks old maybe fed 4 times a day. From 10 weeks to 6 months, 3 times a day should be enough. After 6 months, twice daily will serve. And after 1 year, once a dayplus a biscuit for breakfastis ample.

Meat should be the main part of your dog’s diet. Fresh, canned, or frozen beef or horsemeat are good choices. It is not necessary to cook the meat, but it should be served at room temperature. With the meet, mix a dog meal or kibbled biscuit soaked in hot water, soup, or milk. You can get meal or biscuit in the supermarket, feed store, or pet shop. Puppies need vitamins and minerals, and your veterinarian can give you vitamin tablets that your dog will enjoy chewing.

Other foods you may safely give your dog are well-cooked chicken, lamb, beef hearts, liver, and leafy vegetables. Hard biscuits of the right size for the dog’s mouth and dog candy will be appreciated, too. A little cooked rice or dry toast may help the dog in illness or when it is recovering.

A puppy loses its baby teeth when it is between 4 and 5 months. It will be grateful for beef hide or rawhide strips to chew. You can buy them at supermarkets and pet shops. These strips are also very helpful in keeping the puppy from chewing your shoes and the furniture. Pet shops and markets also carry special hard marrow bones that help in teething and in keeping the new teeth clean and healthy.

Leave a bowl of water so that your dog can have a drink at any timebut remove the supply of water at 5 or 6 PM when you housebreaking a puppy. This will help the puppy go through the night without a mistake.

Looking After Your Dog, Part Six - Dog Health Insurance

Pet health insurance is not a novel idea by any means. The concept has been around for 15-20 years. Many people believe that having medical insurance for a pet is not justified, and is rather something that depicts indulgence. However, the truth is that pet health insurance has nothing to do with being lavish. It purely depends on how much you care for your pet. It is the question of whether you consider your pet a part of your family, and therefore, would want to have it insured.

Pet health insurance plans take several aspects into consideration before awarding an insurance cover. The decision may be based on several considerations - species, age, pre-existing health conditions and lifestyle of the pet (i.e. a docile one compared to one of a sports dog). A few of the pet insurance companies don’t have an age limit. However, it’s easier to get pet health insurance if your pet isn’t too old. Therefore, insurance schemes typically start off at an early age of around 6 weeks for a dog.

The decision to have pet health insurance also depends a lot on your pet’s current health. If, God forbid, your canine is suffering from a fatal ailment, then there is no point having him insured. Moreover, getting insurance in such a case is all the more difficult to say the least. Pet health insurance costs vary widely owing much to the broad variety of insurance packages available. Comprehensive pet health insurance schemes cover the costs of annual checkups, vaccinations, routine care and preventive medications, and spay/neuter surgeries. Partial plans only cover accident and illness costs.

Insurance schemes are not for everyone. It might be the case that your dog’s current health condition does not satisfy the requirements of the insurance company. But you should not be disheartened in such a scenario. Some medical facilities offer pet wellness packages, which allow you to avail vaccinations and pet health checkups at discounted prices. You could go ahead for one such scheme.

Pets are Human too!

As a young girl, I used to see a dog every day on my way home from school. There was something about him. He had a short coat and was tan in color. For my stories sake, we’ll name him Jake as I never did know his name. Jake was always tied to an apple tree that was a distance from his owner’s home. There was an old dog house in the dirt by the tree. For whatever reason, I never saw Jake in it although it did appear to be too small for him. There was a dirty metal bowl by the dog house. I can recall asking myself how he could drink water and have food in the bowl at the same time. Such is the innocence of a child.

It didn’t matter what season we were in, Jake was always there, tied to that tree. I think what drew me to Jake was his tell tale body language. I don’t know how old he was but his demeanor said “old.” Jake always looked beaten. By that I mean his head was normally hung below his shoulders and his tail always tucked under him. When he looked at me with those big brown eyes I saw sadness. You see, Jake never had toys to play with or children to run with. He never looked like he had a bath or had been brushed. I shudder to think what his teeth looked like or when the last time was that his nails were clipped. His eyes told me that his spirit was broken.
I walked past Jake for many years until one day he was no longer there. I don’t know what happened. I guess as a child I didn’t want to know.

I have never forgotten that dog and blame myself for not speaking up. You see, even as a child I felt there were injustices in the world. I think this is why I fight the injustices of pets today. You see, the Jakes of the world have no choices to make. They don’t get to pick the family, labeled their owner. They are pulled from their mom’s and placed in an environment that is not of their choosing. Many times after the newness of a pet wears off, their lives become one drawn out state of loneliness and deprivation.
I tell you this story because I want people to be aware that “Pets are human too.” Like us,they have physical and emotional needs that must be met. Because of this, we all need to look long and hard at ourselves to determine whether a dog or cat or any other animal should be placed in our homes.

Remember, pets don’t have a choice in the matter of “ownership.” Pets do however, deserve and have a right to be happy, living in a home of love and respect.
